The gist of the recent thread was that MAME has code in it for 4-way to treat the diaganols special. If going in one direction and then you hit a diaganol, it keeps going the original direction until you are through the diaganol and going in a different direction.
Not sure if this is kicked off by the /joy 4way switch mentioned here. It didn't seem to work without a switch
