I saw a message thread from last summer/fall about people
using the Happ optical rotary joysticks for those SNK games,
and modifying the MAME source to use the axis inputs
instead of the left/right rotate default inputs. I
didn't even know about such a concept and didn't really
know the difference in the Happ 12 position or the
optical rotary sticks, but I definitely wouldn't have
wanted to keep manually hacking the source after every
release, so I went and found out about a way to connect
the real thing to the 12 position stick games like Ikari
and Guerrilla war. This device is outlined on a web site
and allows plugging in the 12 position switch harness
and providing two outputs, rotate left and rotate right,
for MAME. So the proper joysticks can finally be used.
