5 years ago, I could have answered this in a jiffy, as I used to could squeeze memory from a lemon if I had to. But now.. :) When Win95 came along, it started handling all that for me, and I have about lost knowledge. What I used to do when all else failed, was use memmaker. If I'm not mistaken, true Dos still uses the first (is it 640k or 1028k +56k or something) kb for drivers and such. I hardly ever used smartdrive. I bet it is a memory allocation parameter you need to set somewhere. Another good approach, is to boot up windows... then shut down to dos, (and even just try a dos prompt) and see if it works. (If so.. search for a file called dosstart.bat in the windows dir, and integrate that to your Dos only boot up.). I haven't had this problem in years, and my description may be old as the hills heh. But the best thing to do, is just experiment. back up your config.sys, and autoexec.bat files, and go to town. Use memmaker if all else fails :) Gosh I wish I knew the answer to this myself... now I want to dig up and find a solution.
