Maybe 8-way joysticks on 4-way games could be more effective by a software solution in the code of MAME, making it easier to play games like donkey kong and pac-man on an 8-way. This could be done by adding an option that wouldn't allow two directions to be used at the same time. For example if the player had the joystick in the up position and then moved it to the up-right position, MAME would read that as right only, not up-right. I'm having trouble explaining this with words, but I hope you can get the idea. I don't know if this would work or not, just an idea.
