Here is all I know so far.

In the optical games (the mouse or trackball or spinner controled games) it is easy to reverse left for right and up for down.

You set TAB>ANALOG CONTROLS>TRACK X REVERSE to YES to reverse left and right, and do the same for TRACK Y REVERSE to swap up and down.

The option may be called something else in some games, but it's always the one labeled "reverse".

BUT

this doesn't solve the sideways mounted trackball. To do this you have to either alter the hardware (swap leads or something - I haven't looked at this yet) or use software.

So far, I have found the best way is to use Microsoft's Intellipoint driver, and use the "orientation" function. This very cleverly allows you to assign any direction of physical movement to any cursor track.

It's probably perfect for cabs, as you'd probably want the trackball to be your mouse anyway.

It's not perfect for me in front of the regular PC, as I don't want to have to hold my normal mouse at 90*. BUT the nice thing is, it's only "active" with intellipoint running, so I simply disable intellipoint from the startup options, and run it from a desktop shortcut prior to starting MAME if I want to play any trackball games.

I don't yet know how to reassign the optical controls in MAME the way you can assign different keys / buttons.

: OK. I like how you are mounting the trackball, but it is sideways. How will you deal with the issue of it tracking correctly? That would allow me to really free up some vital vertical space on my CP. Thanks.

: : I think you can swap this in MAME itself using the TAB-AnALOG CONTROLS menu. and sett the revers option as required. I do this to make the games work properly with my spinner, ie swapping left and Right.

: : Have you considered mounting the trackball without the plastic case? I did just this and it takes WAY less space. I found cutting out the shape of the circuit board while leaving 4 corner tabs in a 3/4" contertop allowed me to mount the circuit board with just 3 little washers as spacers between it and the panel bottom and the tracball sits at a perfect height.

: : : OK. This may be a dumb question, but I am at the point that I need to start routing my control panel, and I am using a Crystal Trackball (standard PC trackball)in my cabinet. Anyhow, it would fit better if I could turn it upside down. By that I mean up and down are switched around, as well as right and left. Can this be swapped around via a frontend or MAME itself? If not, I will have to deal with it in the regular position... Thanks.
