AD is correct in that there are high voltages in monitors. I wouldn't get terribly concerned though.

As long as you're only handling the plastics of the monitor as you disassemble it you should be ok. Last time I checked, plastics aren't electrically conductive. If you find yourself needing to stick screw drivers and what not inside the case to pry the case off, just be careful not to jam a screwdriver into a bunch of components while you're at it.

At one time I did know how to dis-charge a monitor's current. As I recall it had something to do with putting a screw driver up inside that suction-cup thing stuck on the tube and shorting it somewhere. I'll bet you a dozen donuts you can find out how to do this by simply visiting your library and checking out a basic monitor repair manual. They're all pretty much the same as I was told by the guy who showed me how to dis-charge the units. That was 10 years ago, those brain cells are pretty much pickled now. . .

BTW, I ordered a monitor that wasn't in any plastics and tested it before installing it in my cab. I didn't actually discharge the unit before installation, I just paid attention to my hands and didn't grab any components. The frame around the monitor is tied to earth-ground and is safe to hold on to. It's also safe to actually touch the tube's backside. Of course, you're doing all of this while the monitor is unplugged, right? :-)

I assume your desire to remove the plastics is either rooted in mechanical or asthetic issues. Either way, I'd almost certainly do the same thing you are. So just go for it and be careful, you'll be ok.

Keep us updated with how it turns out.

: Well, rather than take this down to an ugly level I'll just say this... Some people want to do things one way and some want to do it another... There's no need to say someone's idea is "dumb" because it differs from yours.

: Now then, having said that... Someone explain to me how taking a plastic shell off a monitor has anything to do with playing with high voltages? Other than the fact that there IS high voltage running inside and you have removed one layer of protection between you and it. Call me crazy but the only way you are gonna get "zapped" is if you try and remove the flyback transformer... Just not seeing how removing the plastic shell is going to cause all hell to break loose.

:
: : Guys, this is so dumb. You are unnecessarily
