Danger in using regular Television?

Is there a danger in using a regular television monitor rather than a dedicated arcade one? I would assume that the dedicated monitor was designed so people can stand one foot in front of it without any danger to the eyes. The living room monitor was made to be viewed from a distance. Any insight would be helpful!
