Use 8. The reason being, as Next Generation consoles continue to be emulated (I mean the ones that use CD-ROMS and the like), like for instance Bleem! and VGS (Virtual Game Station, I have both), the button configuration would be 4+4, the first 4 bein Triangle, Circle, X and Square, L1, R1, L2 R2.
The reason I use Playstation emus in the cabinet is for great Arcade translations like Tekken 3 and stuff.
So if you have the room ,give yourself the extra buttons.
BTW, Stargate uses 6 as well, PLUS the up/down.
