In Reply to: Well then SortInfo is wrong on "Mole Attack" and on a lot more too. posted by Just Michael on 17, 2000 at 4:40 AM:
You are right, Defender is only 5 buttons + joystick up and down. I don't know why MAME report it as 7 buttons (maybe counting up and down as buttons insted of joystick)...
SortInfo is just sorting the information produced by MAME running it with the -listinfo argument. That information is not about how the original game was setup, just how MAME is configured to handle the game. It is quite usable if you are planning a control panel for MAME (not the same as interfacing the real thing trough JAMMA etc.)...
So if any one is wrong then it has to be MAME...

: Mole Attack uses 9. It is very easy to see why if you run it.
: You have to whack the moles and there are 9 holes for them to
: appear from. The holes are in a 3x3 grid.
: What are the 7 buttons for Defender? All I remember are 5:
: Fire
: Thrust
: Smart Bombs
: Hyperspace
: Reverse
: About your screenshot:
: I do not use SortInfo so I have no idea where it gets
: its info but it definately needs to be fixed since
: about half of the games shown have errors in there info.
: Blades Of Steel
: Both version only have 2 players.
: Blast Off
: Only uses 2 buttons (Fire and Select). Probably wrong
: because it on jamma hardware which supports up to 3.
: Blaster
: Only uses 2 buttons (Blast and Thrust)
: Blasteroids
: Both versions only had 2 players and use 3 buttons per
: player (Fire, Thrust, Transform). You had to push all
: 3 at the same time to get the Rip Star to activate.
: Blazer
: Only uses 2 buttons (Fire and Missile). Probably wrong
: because it on jamma hardware which supports up to 3.
: Blazing Star
: Only has 4 buttons per player. (Hint: It's a NeoGeo)
: : I was just using SortInfo and it lists Mole Attack as a 1 player 8 button game (+ 1 coin), that is 8 buttons to me (nor counting the coin). I tried KLOV to but no record of "Mole Attack".
: : The only game I know of with more than 6 buttons worth mentioning is Defender, it uses 7 buttons. But I plan to use buttons from both player 1 and 2 to sort that out (Defender is one player only, and the original CP had buttons all over in the first place so I will use some of the player 1 and some of player 2 buttons when playing Defender).
: : I also found that 6 buttons per player is optimal if you want to have as less buttons as possible on your CP.
: : : : I was just wondering what game uses 8 pushbuttons duging game play... i know Streetfighter uses 6 and so does MK. Im making a standalone control panel and im wondering if to use 8 buttons per player or just 6.
: : : : So far it looks like 6 is winning.
: : : : But before i draw that out, id like to know if there are games that actualy require 8 pushbuttons for game play per player.
: : : : Any ideas?

: : : I don't know of any that use 8.
