In discussions with Chris (Fultra) we have decided to go down the route of designing our own optical board, which will fit on the Fultra spinner and the Happ trackball.
One interesting point: This problem does not arise if the PS/2 port is being used, as the PS/2 mouse port supplies a "solid" +5 volts. This is probably why that new Hagstrom interface uses this port. I think this a less useful option, as it limits flexibility. For example no 2-player trackball games, no EMU+ etc. I reckon sticking to the serial port(s) is the best way to go, and leave the PS/2 port for a real mouse in Windows if required.
