I don't know much about splitting, but I believe you'd get signal degregation by doing it. I use the Expandview by Belkin Electronics. I built two cabinets (one Jedi replica and one modern cabaret), and the Expandview is great for displaying on all 3 monitors (one on desktop) at once--I own two Expandviews units: one can display on up to 4, and the other up to 8). The picture is great on all monitors (although obviously not as clear as displaying on just a single monitor). It is usually used for presentations.
I bought mine off of Ebay, so if you can't get the splitting thing to work, maybe you could find a deal on Ebay.
