I had a buddy who lost his tab function not long ago. Apparently his little boy got into the MAME settings and reprogramed the tab key to something else.
He just recently reinstalled MAME and it still didn't work after deleteing mame.cfg. Since he had no .cfg files for any games, I had him delete the .cfg files in the cfg directory. That did the trick. If you want to keep your .cfg files, I would back them up first and then try to delete the default.cfg file first. If not look for one that stands out in the crowd or just delete them all. They can always be regenerated.
