I think that rare Sony stick is actually called the Dual Analog Stick (or Joystick). I think the 'shot' term only goes
with controllers that have the 'force feedback.'

I don't think there's any way to just patch in an analog stick onto a digital stick.
It's not the number of wires on the connector that matters.
What kind of stick are you using? the Ascii arcade one? I don't remember what those look like.
Maybe you can get better response by using a shorter digital stick?

There were some 3rd party controllers that were compatible with the Dual Analog Stick mode, but they were all probably
flight-stick controllers. I have a joystick and throttle that work in dual analog stick mode, but they tied the w-axis control to a sliding tab. It works good for Ace Combat 2, but I had hoped it worked with Mechwarrior.
Alas, the terrible w-axis implementation killed that dream. It also explains why the stick was only $19 at EB.
