The best way is to use a continuity tester. It is a small device that has two wires connected to a bulb. You can buy it for several dollars at any store that sells electrical products: Radio Shack, Wal Mart, Lowes, etc and it only costs a couple dollars. Touch one wire to pin in the connector then touch the other wire to each of the wires on the cable (just cut the other end of the VGA cable off clean and seperate each wire). Touch each wire until the light comes on. Then you will know that pin is hooked to that wire. You can also buy a multimeter with a continuity test built in, they usually make a buzz sound to indicate continuity. This will be more expensive but will give you other usefull functions as well.
