Ordered a Happ Trackball. Will guts from a MS mouse work?

I didn't order the serial interface kit because I was thinking that I could purchase a $10 mouse a Fry's Electronics and steal the serial inteface from it and hook it up to the trackball. Seems like a good idea, anybody tried it? Also, is there any reason why this wouldn't work on the Fultra Spinner too?
