When finding the combinations of contacts with a piece of wire, it's best to use an old PC if you have one. Occationally you may get against two contacts that could damage your PC. If you do not have an old PC, be careful not to touch the wire to any of the solder points that are not coming from the two rows of the matrix. I have an old 286 laptop I use for testing keyboard hacks. Sometimes I get against two contacts that I shouldn't and a few sparks fly and the PC reboots. But it always comes back to life.
