I think that Blasteroids sucks without a spinner, it is just to slow...
But Asteroids and Space Dual with a joystick I find ok. Here in Europe I have seen in the past Asteroids with a joystick.

: hey guys - i have a lil dilemma. blasteroids is one of my fave games ever, nice twist on asteroids with a few extras. But the dedicated game is hard to find and will probably be expensive and yadda yadda...
: anybody out there played Blasteroids, or even Asteroids or Space Duel, with MAME and joysticks versus buttons(asteroids) or spinners (blasteroids) for rotation of your ship? how well does the right/left work for you?
