asteroids/blasteroids with joysticks?

hey guys - i have a lil dilemma. blasteroids is one of my fave games ever, nice twist on asteroids with a few extras. But the dedicated game is hard to find and will probably be expensive and yadda yadda...

anybody out there played Blasteroids, or even Asteroids or Space Duel, with MAME and joysticks versus buttons(asteroids) or spinners (blasteroids) for rotation of your ship? how well does the right/left work for you?
