For my cocktail cab which i have playing the exact types of games you mention I used a simple Pentium 133 with only 16 megs of RAM. I use arcadeOS and run mame in DOS. It works perfectly fine for quite a few games. So if you want to do the vertical classics, I think this system is fine. If your gonna have a bigger monitor (19" or up) you can even play some of the horizantal games. They just won't fill up the whole screen. That way you can do asteroids, mario bros., ect. Just have ArcadeOS rotate them for you. You CAN build a mame machine that is simple and very entertaining for very little money. I personally think that's what's wrong with a lot of the machines out there. They try to do too much and are too complicated. They just don't "look and feel" like a real machine. On my cocktail I planned on it playing only the older games. It would have looked totally stupid to have a giant control panel on all 4 sides with a spinner, trackball, star wars stick, steering wheel, ect. I mean...come on! Just my opinion.
