: Is particle board and MDF the same thing?

I don't think so. MDF is usually only refered to as MDF and is distinguishable by its smooth appearance, due, as someone pointed out, to its being made from sawdust and glue.

Particle board, on the other hand, is also refered to as chip board and it's "proper" name OSB (oriented strand board). It is distinguishable by its rough appearance, and is made from glued and compressed larger "chips" which are clearly visible when looking at it.

FWIW, if I were to build a whole cabinet, I would use plywood. Can be more expensive, but you'll get a very good product, flexable finishing options (contact paper, paint, stain, varnish etc.) and probably better quality than an original cab. Also look for specials - I've gotten 3/4" oak for as little as $30 Cdn per sheet

However, any of the 3, if used properly can produce great results as evidenced on the examples page - many fine cabinets.
