MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard is the wood you want to use. I'm assuming that the reason that you think the particle board you lookedd at would look bad painted is because it was chipboard which has large chips of wood. MDF is made from glue and sawdust, because of this it'll dull a saw blade, but it is the same stuff actual cabs are made out of. Hope it helps.

: hello all

: i am not versed in the ways of wood. I made my control panel with 1/2" particle board since I could cover up the roughness with formica. Now I need to build my cabinet and don't know what kinds of wood I should use.

: I went to home depot and they had this GIS stuff that was nice except it was like $45 cdn. for an 8x4 sheet. I need about 2.5 sheets. The particle board is cheap but doesn't look very strong or managable plus it would like crap if I painted it.

: So, any suggestions on the wood to use? I was hoping the lumber would cost no more then $100 cdn after tax for all 2.5 sheets. If is going to be more I might as well just buy an old cabinet at an auction.

: thanks for any advice!
