Hey Shane,
I used 3/4" particle board for my cabinet, and after priming it, painting it, and sealing it with polyeurethane, it turned out great. Particle board isn't the strongest wood known to man, but as long as you stratigically brace it, you should have no problems whatsoever. Check out the look at my page if you wanna.
