I personally used 3/4" particle board. It's very fine grained stuff, but I can't remember the exact Home Depot name for it. It ran about $17/sheet and works VERY well. Build the box like you would a cabinet with supports at each joint. I used 1x6 ripped into five one inch wide strips (saw ate the rest) and 1 1/4" drywall screws with Liquid Nails for holding it together. Shouldn't ever have problems with it staying together, except for maybe in a rainstorm or flood or somthing...
