8-way sticks still have just four microswitches. The difference between the Super in 4-way and 8-way is that the diagonals (two switches at once, like up and right) are easy to hit when the actuator is flipped over to "8-way", and hard to hit when in "4-way". There are also optical joysticks, but that's a whole 'nother story.
