I will start building a simple cabinet this weekend for the kids. Once it is complete I will build an arcade cabinet. The kid's cabinet will run home console emulators of the 70s and 80s and a gameboy emulator. 2 joysticks, 2 buttons per stick and only 4 other buttons on the control panel; Quit, Start, Select, and Pause. Quit will back out of the emulator to ArcadeOS, Start will start highlighted game in AOS and it will also function as the start/reset button of console units. Select will take you through the emulators in AOS and act as the select button of console units. Pause will pause a game. Joystick 1 up and down will navigate you up and down an AOS menu. Does it sound like I have everything covered?
I plan to disable the Quit[esc] button in AOS mode so the kids don't jump out to a DOS prompt. Plan to have the machine boot to AOS when they flip a power switch on the cabinet. Another question. Would there be any problems caused if I just power off without backing out of AOS to DOS?
Also planning on using a 15" PC monitor in this cabinet, saving money for an arcade monitor in my next cabinet.
