I tried this same idea back in October when I was building the Goldmine, and quickly came to the same conclusion that Tom did, which is it doesn’t work. I even tried mounting it on the bottom of the control panel, and using spacers to get the plate at a point where the stick does move. Even then, the feel isn’t right. A true four-way will allow you to go from top to side with one motion, with this plate setup you have to go back to neutral and then to side. It was actually worse than using an 8-way.

: hi guys, just had a brainstorm.

: Problem: how to get 8 way to 4 way easily.

: Question: well, how are they physically different?
: Answer: in many cases, just a different shaped restrictor plate mounted to the shaft under the CP...
: --therefore---
: Solution: a surface-mounted restrictor plate that you can slide on whenever you want to tackle that pac maze!

: link below to my crude drawing of such a device, which you slide onto a pair of small rails mounted between your stick's carriage bolts whenever you want. the hole in the bottom edge allows you to slide on and off without removing the joystick or anything.

: may be a dumb idea, but it just might work...
: cheers!
