Dan is exactly right. Pole Position for example uses the same PCB interface that some of the Atari spinners/trackballs used.
I use my spinners for games like Super Sprint, Pole position, etc.
: : I have seen a few people with steering wheels attached to their control panel, and thought that it was a neat idea
: If you're using it for PC games, then it's a good idea. If you want to use a PC steering wheel exclusively for MAME, then I wouldn't bother. The driving games in MAME used optical wheels (imagine attaching a steering wheel to a spinner and you have the idea). I have a device called the Mouse Wheel which uses a shaft with a wheel attached to it that turns the mouse ball. This works great for the MAME driving games (although I haven't figured out how to get my CH Pedals working separately with this setup).
