Hacking a "scrolling" mouse.

If one wanted to add a trackball and spinner to a control panel, would it be possible to hack one of the newer scrolling mice with the little "wheel", and use the mouse-ball circuitry for the trackball and the scrolling wheel circuitry for the spinner ?

What do you guys think?
