You could also go with DOS networking if you feel adventurous and forgo windows altogether. You can use the MSDOS NT Client (which connects with Win9x machines just fine) or you could use Invisible LAN which is now freeware since the company went out of business. They have peer-to-peer network clients for Win9x and DOS that work just great and don't interfere with the other network clients (Client for Microsoft Networks) or protocols.
