I think that you are right when you say that a true 4-way gives total control and feels like te real thing.
But for me it makes no noticable difference playing mspacman with my 8 way or 4 way wico joystick. I think it will depend on a combination of the stick adjustment (the leafs) and personal preference if a 8-way will be ok to use.
and yes the logic behind the key scheme is a bit flawed. I noticed that too when I first read about it. But I tried it with the only game I had problems with, mrdo!, and it worked for me :-)

: I just tried those settings and in one round of Pac-Man I had 4 occurances of Pac moving in a direction I didn't intend (losing a life in one of them). Using a true 4-way I never have any problems. Maybe those settings help a little bit, but it is by no means the way to go if you want to be in total control.
