: : : How do you disable the diagonals in MAME? I suspect it has something to do with using the NOT command.

: : Yes it has.
: : For example for up:
: : In the key menu go to the p1 up.
: : hit enter. hit up and then fast after each other 2 times left.
: : hit enter. hit up and then fast after each other 2 times right.
: : The selection should now read: up not left or up not right.

: I'll have to try this out because it doesn't add up in my mind. How does MAME pick between "up not right" for up and "right not up" for right? A diagonal is ambiguous. This will help from having a diagonal confuse the code, but it wouldn't ensure that Pac-Man moves to the right when I want him to. I think a true 4-way is the only was to get the proper results. I'll try to prove my theory tonight.

I just tried those settings and in one round of Pac-Man I had 4 occurances of Pac moving in a direction I didn't intend (losing a life in one of them). Using a true 4-way I never have any problems. Maybe those settings help a little bit, but it is by no means the way to go if you want to be in total control.
