8/4/2-way sticks

hey guys, wondering if joysticks designed one way will work okay for games designed for the other. For example, will using an 8-way joystick make games that use 4- or 2-way sticks play badly? like getting the frustrating Pac-man direction-change-hangup we all dread?

heheee i'm asking because this MAME idea is getting to me... I have a 2-player horizontal JAMMA cab, why not a vertical 1-player MAME cab now...
