In Reply to: I don't like the way Advanced Mame cuts off so many lines in some games when I could just stretch the game out in regular Mame and have a little screen missing but no missing lines. posted by Agent Davis on 26, 2000 at 3:49 AM:

Many ppl are going to use AdvMAME, w/o experimenting and not like the first thing they see. It is extremely versatile - you possibly haven't exhausted the options.

If you use a real arcade monitor then your options are more limited I guess, but if ur using a U3100 or similar VGA compatible arcade monitor, your options are many. SVGA TV's should also reap good results - basically anything that can deliver 400+ lines of resolution will get some real performance benefits via AdvMAME.

Have you tried:

- tweaking your own custom modes to support non-typical resolutions. This is the route I've gone with my ArcadePC. Pixel perfect modes for every game, no stretching needed. Full screen, correct aspect ratio, game specific scan rates. Awesome!

- using very high resolutions with the stretch option; no more missing lines. Use the blitter strech for example at 640x480x16 - 224x288 or 240x320 and other vertical modes will look perfect. Doesn't even look like a stretch is going on!

Once again, if ur using certain hardware (personally I don't see why ppl use normal arcade monitors when there are many VGA solutions out there - price I suppose, but to me a few extra months of saving up for something better is worth it) then you may be limited. Old-skool monitors often have *physical* limits of 224 or so lines of resolution, and there's simply no way to circumvent that limit in software w/o missing part of the display. But if not then experimenting with AdvMAME will have huge payoffs.

Good luck and happy gaming with whatever MAME you use. :)

: : There is no better MAME than Advance MAME, and no, it's nothing to do with AMAME. Advance MAME has tons of features that make it the ultimate cabinet MAME. Most important are the display features, allowing the user to tweak their own modes and use various effects to get full screen, correct aspect ratios in every single game. It takes time and work to learn how to properly use and configure it, but once you do, you will never want to use another MAME.

: : : Ummmmm..... is Advanced MAME AMAME?? The unofficial released ver at http://www.mameworld.net/ that runs in a DOS box?? All these versions are getting confusing.... MAME+, MAME, AMAME, PMAME, UMAME, MAME32 hahah... I have been sticking with Unofficial MAME32 for windows mainly because I built my entire MAME cocktail project around Win98 & USB. P400 Celeron w/128Mb RAM, 8Mb video RAM on motherboard and all seems to run nice and slick-like. Should I be running a different version?? Anyone?? Bueller???
