My control panel has a Star-Wars style yoke that I built, and I had orginally given serious thought to possibly having a detachable steering wheel that would have a quick-change mount on the front of the yoke. My yoke has a 1" mount for the x axis - more than strong enough I would say. For some reason or another, I never pursued this further - perhaps I'll make some modifications now.
