Hey CaVol,

I went with 3/4" particle board, and it turned out great. I went with 3/4" just because that seemed to be what other people did, but I'm very happy with it.

That coated particle board is called melamine (I always mispronounce/misspell it). It makes a nice table, but it wouldn't use it for a cabinet. Here's why:
1. That coating has a tendency to chip; especially when you cut it. Also, I dug through the whole stack of 20-30 or so at Home Depot for my table, and I couldn't find a single sheet that DIDN'T have nicks in it.
2. Only the tops and bottoms are coated. If you cut it, you'll have an irregularly-covered surface due to the sides being bare particle board.
3. If you're gonna paint it anyway, I'd just get regular particle board.

Just my $0.02.
