Good question. I don't have a complete answer for you. Let me share an experience with you and you can investigate on your end.

A few weeks ago I bought a 27" Wells Gardner VGA monitor that was fixed frequency. It's maximum rated resolution is 640x480. To my total surprise, I found that it wasn't capable of outputting 400x300! It turns out that mode needs to set the Horizontal Frequency to 35KHz. 640x480 (and several other of the lower resolutions) only require 31.5KHz. The verdict: 400x300 wasn't compatible. I also found that when using 512x384 everything was OK when using my notebook computer to drive the display, but my desktop computer used a different method of driving that mode (pixel clock or something) and WASN'T able to drive that same mode.

Now, do TV's have the same problem? I have no idea. If I were in your position, I would investigate it very, very carefully so you can avoid paying a restocking fee for returned equipment as I was forced to. My suggestion would be for you to start a new thread on this board and ask people what they know.

BTW, here are some games that run best at 400x300: Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, all of the Capcom side scrollers like Ghouls and Ghosts, Willow, etc. There are probably more (a lot more) and to me it was too great a compromise to keep the monitor and lose these games.

: Would a TV that is advertised as >600 lines resolution, be able to display windows in a 800x600 format? I'm going to try out my 31" TV first, and if that works, I'll buy a 27" TV for around $400. ANy thoughts?

:
: : I was quoted US$780.00. It's a bit pricey, but not altogether bad considering the specs. I'm trying to get him to drop the price a bit before I shell out the cash.

: : : How much does the 27" cost?

: : : : I found this site accidentally. I looked at the specs on the Hanaho Arcade PC and noticed the monitor was a NeoTec. So I looked them up.

: : : : www.neotecgraphic.com

: : : : I called them up and they put me in touch with a distributor who'll sell me a monitor.

: : : : The told me the Hi-Res 26" is MORE expensive than the 27" flat tube because they don't sell as many. Go figure! So I'm saving my pennies for the 27". Did I mention it's a multi-sync? :-)

: : : : SmashTV, here I come!!!
