My wife and I budget an "allowance" we each get each payday. This is money we can each spend any way we want without having to justify the expenditure. With part of my allowance I've started accumulating parts for my arcade project. My wife doesn't mind, so long as I don't leave the stuff in the middle of the kitchen or living room!
We've been budgeting this allowance for about ten years now. It works.
