This method has always worked for me (home, family, job, etc) - just present them with a much worse alternative, and you're original plan will seem great. For example, if your wife is giving you grief about the cabinet, just come back with a "You know, it's not like I'm spending the money on booze and hookers!" See? In that light, plunking down the $$$ for the cabinet seems like the nicest thing you could've done!
Actually, my wife thought that it was a damn cool idea the whole way through, and she even loaned me her HTML skills for the Arcade Paradise page. She DID refer to the cabinet as "the other woman" when I was working on it because of the amount of time that I spent with it...
