I built a custom cabinet to use with MAME using Happ Controls USB boards. Check it out on my site. I feel that using USB allows you to have ANY configuration you can think of and also allowing you to add almost as many controls as you want. I currently have 4 independent Happs 8-way joysticks (1 actuated as a 4-way), 2 of them having 6 buttons and the other 2 with 7 buttons, a Trackball with it's own 3 buttons (trackball and its buttons act as the mouse within the Windows environment, as well as the left and right mouse buttons. The 3rd button does nothing in Windows. I have also mapped these 3 buttons within the MAME GUI as my Pause, Bring-up MAME GUI, and User Cancel (escape from Game)). I also have a spinner, a Microsoft USB steering Wheel and a Microsoft USB Sidewinder Joystick. I hope this entices some of you along the path of USB.... it has treated me well. Incidentally, this project took me one Saturday for the wiring and one sunday for the cabinet contruction..... Thats TWO days worth of work for a lifetime of retrogaming!!!!! Good luck to all of you in your projects... I cant reccommend the USB option enough!!!
