That you have really old romsets (like a few years old). See, way back in the days when neogeo emulation was just new many of the games dumped were actually off carts for the Neogeo home system (MVS2?) rather than the actual arcade boards. Since they were the only ones avilible MAME was compiled to work with them.

Later on when proper arcade board dumps of the games became avilible support for the old home system dumps was taken out of mame to keep it true to its goals of preserving the real adrcade romsets to replace those on defective boards.

As far as you are concerned this will only be relivant if
a) you are upgrading from a reasonably old version of mame
and
b) your rom dumps are pretty old.

if this is the case you may have no choice but to download them all again :-(

if that doesn't help...

Remember that they change the rom names with every release of mame to encourage accurate dumps (childish joke goes here) so it may pay to run yours through one of the many rom renamers/checkers out there. Sorry I don't have a link but you should be able to find one on retrogames.
