I also hacked my gamepad pro, I use MAMELOAD frontend, but you have to build a keyset for it to use your gamepad in the menu functions. Open up gravis keyset manager and build one for mame using mame.exe. Dont forget to set it in properties(the keyset) as a dos function. I am using this through a dos-box in windows, if your using pure dos, i cant say if this will work but my set up is great and am very satisfied.
