My understanding of this problem is that the mouse pulses are too fast for the mouse hardware to keep up. If the mouse misses some pulses it can cause the mouse to stall or to temporarily go backwards.

Notice in the "how to" page from TwistyGrip, they broke off every spoke on the mouse encoder wheel - this addressed the problem for them.

: I have seen people complaining about how a hacked mouse spinner or trackball cannot keep up when it is spun quickly. I have experienced the same thing with my setup. I think this is probably caused because the electronics of the mouse are just running too slowly.
: Lately, though, a few 'gaming' mice have been released. These mice have extremely high DPI ratings, which would require much faster processing power. The mice I know of like this are the Karna Razer Boomslang 1000 (1000 DPI) and 2000 (2000 DPI), and the Logitech Wingman Gaming Mouse (DPI unknown). Has anyone tried using one of these mice for their hack? These mice aren't cheap, though. The Logitech retails for $40, the 2000 for $100, and I've seen the 1000 go on eBay for around $50.
