The MAME 'hack' is anything but crappy. The resulting output is amazing. It looks exactly like a real arcade board driving the monitor (Vector stuff isn't exact, but still looks real good with the interlaced modes).
I have used the VGATV driver to use Windows on my arcade monitor. It's very difficult to read text, but games look pretty good.
