Here's the various different ways to look at dos settings:

The information john mac supplied should be used in
whichever of the following methods you use to get to DOS.

1. DOS in a window (i.e. running a command prompt)... This should
inherit Windows settings and sound should work, I *think* -- however,
if in doubt or it doesn't, you can put the entries john mac listed
in the config.sys and autoexec.bat in the C:\ directory. They really
won't hurt anything so that's probably a good idea anyway.

2. Setting up an icon to run in DOS mode: When a program is set to run in
DOS mode (right-click on the icon, choose properties. Click on the program
tab. Then click on the "Advanced" button. Put a check mark in the MS-DOS mode
box.), you can configure a config.sys and autoexec.bat *ONLY* for that particular
program that won't affect anything else. After you check the MS-DOS mode box,
on that same window click the "Specify a new MS-DOS configuration" bullet. It allows
you then to enter a custom config.sys and autoexec.bat for that program. Use what
john mac entered above. NOTE: This is Windows 98 - it works the same in other versions
of Windows 9x, but the labels might be somewhat different.

3. Shutting down and restarting in DOS mode. When you do a shutdown/restart, a file called
dosstart.bat is run as the autoexec.bat. Put the autoexec.bat statements here. (note: Doing
this one from memory, as I don't have my Win95 resource kit here at home...) Uncertain about
the config.sys portions. This method of getting to DOS also may use the next configuration:

4. Starting in DOS mode upon bootup -- the files config.dos and autoexec.dos are used when booting
up in DOS mode. Use them as you would config.sys and autoexec.bat.

I'll check my resource kit at work and verify what I've said here... However, what I'd do is this:

1. If you are running in a DOS window but still need DOS settings for the sound card, put them in the
config.sys and autoexec.bat in the C:\ directory.
2. If you are using pure dos mode, choose the option to start in DOS mode when you bootup. Before that
however, make sure you've edited the config.dos and autoexec.dos appropriately...

Mmmm More rusty at this than I though, hope that helps :) I'll check my resource kit at work Monday if
it doesn't work for you :)
