Strange, works if booted in dos and typed in manually but doesn't if loaded auto through autoexec.bat

I don't get it. If I boot my machine up with the following lines in autoexec.bat, mame won't use sound:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4
C:\
cd \arcadeos
arcadeos

but if I reboot in dos and type in:

cd \arcadeos
arcadeos

sound works fine. I don't get it. I need this thing to boot up automatically.
