Vertical Sync problem at a specific resolution

I just picked up a used 27" Wells Gardner VGA monitor. It sports a max res of 640 x 480 x 60Hz.

When I try MAME32 or DOS MAME, most games work just fine unless the game automatically chooses to go into 400 x 300 res mode. When this happens, the monitor totally loses sync and the monitor cannot be adjusted to the range needed by the mode. All modes above and below this resolution work fine. Any ideas?

My only problem with manually selecting the next higher res (512 x 384) is that it tends to shrink the picture so I don't get the full effect of the monitor. What I think I need to do is find a way to control the refresh rate being put out by the video card at 400 x 300, but I have no idea how.
