: + this is what i'm thinking. You know, that is a neat consideration, people who have the space and knowhow could make several MAME machines, each having a theme... one for space/flying shooters with joystick and fire button(s), one for driving/flying shooters with the steering/yoke, one for games like tempest and arkanoid, with the spinner, and then trackball games! it'd be a multimachine arcade all to itself. Like, my NES cabinet is going to be predominantly games like 1942 and lifeforce and xevious, because with turbofire and a joystick you can't beat that kind of gameplay.

That's why most people make interchangable control panels. If you want to play a game that doesn't work well with your current layout, you just switch out the control panel.

Back to the left vs. right on games, my right hand is the button hand for me, if the buttons are on the joystick my right hand is on the joystick, if not my left hand is usually on the stick.
