I purchased two Apex AD600A DVD players yesterday (yeah, the cool ones that have the hidden "hacker" loophole menus, play MP3's, etc). I'll keep one and sell the other on ebay. I was going to go with a pc and pc/dvd player BUT when it came right down to it I really couldn't think of any justification to spend 5 times the money on one of those systems. Yeah, I could surf the web but who really wants to do that on their tv. I thought I did but I think I would rather sit at my computer and watch the 13" tv I have beside it (as well as move my laptop to the "tv room" for some net access). Surfing on the tv started seeming like a giant step backwards instead of some cool geek thing.

: I've been toying with the idea of getting a DVD player for the TV, but I had another idea: I was thinking about getting a PC (like a 500 MHz Celeron eMachine or the like) with a DVD player in it, and then also purchasing an ATI Expert 98 card and sending the S-Video signal out from the ATI to the TV. The upshot would be that I would also be able to web surf, etc (I'll have a network connection to that PC) from my easy chair! Can anyone tell me if there's an obvious reason why I SHOULDN'T do this? Does anyone know how DVD playback looks when using S-Video out from an ATI Expert 98 to a TV? Is there another video card that would suit this venture better? Thanks ahead of time for the input!
