UNPLUG IT RIGHT NOW!!! I would suggest you have a short in your wiring which fried your gameport. Be careful you don't do it again!
Grab a multimeter and test ALL your circuits to ensure all is as it should be, then test it against the diagram you have.
This is a pretty reliable 'hack', I actually use it with all my joysticks (see http://welcome.to/ozstick) and can honestly say I have never had a problem.
