Exactly... Counter-sunk screws. I used non-shrinking drywall patching compound. It hardens up nicely and barely shrinks. It's also really easy to sand so you can get an extremely smooth finish. On my control panel painted with flat black Krylon Brush-On Enamel I can't even tell where the screws were.
